Well my vacation has just been upended. I just received a message from the secretary of my program that I and the other 3 interns still have not received our provisional licences. Mine is still in the "unassigned" status where apparently they have received it, but no one has found the time to look at it. Just 3 weeks to go before we start and the program is already mentioning the possibility of "extending our training" if we fail to receive our licenses. I sent mine in almost 2 months ago, and am getting really irrate over this.

Has anyone else had similar problems? (Especially in Pennsylvania) Plus, if there are any upper level residents with heart-warming stories of everything working out within hours of beginning residency, I'm in the mood to hear it.

Thanks,
Now go back to your soup.

Pennsylvania is notorious for being a real PITA. I too received mine late...don't think I received my training license until a couple of weeks in, but my program allowed me to start, and I know we had other residents have similar problems. I'm not sure how they worked it out frankly since you aren't supposed to have patient contact without a training license...I think they just verified that it was in process and that was good enough (didnt' need it in hand).

Basically what it means for me is that my license renewal is a couple of weeks later than everyone else's. I also didn't take Step 3 until the end of 2nd year, so I didn't officially become a 3rd year on paper until I got my scores back - around August 31 (which is when I become a 5th year as well).

I'm not sure how your program can justify having you extend your residency as there is generally enough weeks in the residency to miss a few and still graduate on time. You should check with ACS, but I believe that you can finish around 3 months early and still be eligible to graduate and sit for the boards. But your program may have different requirements.

The times I have seen this happen, the intern (or more often the fellow) starts as scheduled and functions as a 4th year med student. Everything that requires a physican license gets cosigned. It really shouldn't be a big deal, and CERTAINLY should not prolong your residency.

One would think that's the way it would work...although it wasn't in my case (as I noted above, I was allowed to start work, be paid, sign orders, etc. but I know others who have had some problems).
