Hi,

I am a transitional year resident about to graduate this year. I am applying to multiple pgy-2 positions now (i.e. out of match). my question is what are the chances to be offered a contract if a program extends an interview and later extends a second interview with faculty?

Do programs usually do interviews with multiple candidates for pgy2 positions outside the match?

You're asking an unanswerable question.

No one knows what your chances are to be offered a contract or what specific programs do in these instances. This is an unusual circumstance that most people here will have absolutely no experience with and thus cannot answer your question.

Multiple in-person interviews? Probably pretty high as that's unusual. A tele-interview then an in person interview? That's more common. Either way, you'll have to perform well on the second interview and it sounds like they are ready to give you the job if you don't blow the interview.

In regards to your second question, it depends. Some programs will have a formal interview day where they invite 20 people, put them in a room and treat it like a regular interview as if it were for a position in the match (this is pretty cruel to the applicants). Other (most) programs will only interview 2-3 people and will bring them out individually. Typically they use tele-interviews to screen the list down to a final 2 or 3.

But the bigger question I have is, how did you end up in this situation? Transitional years are extremely competitive, and you likely have step scores >250. It's incredibly rare that someone would match a TY and not match advanced. Did you just not know what you wanted to do and decided to use the TY for its original purpose (figuring out what to do)? Furthermore, why did you wait until the end of the year to apply for positions? This isn't like college where you graduate and look for a job, right?
