PGY-4 Position: Chief Resident in Quality Improvement
and Patient Safety (CRQS)

Available July 2012 for one PGY-4 chief resident in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. This is an innovative new position which includes training in quality improvement, patient safety and clinical and educational system redesign, The VA Medical Center in Syracuse, NY has an excellent track record in pioneering quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, and is one of five facilities nation-wide that was approved for this position this year.

Methods include to attending National VA Patient Safety Center training, participation in patient safety rounds and root cause analyses, appropriate use of clinical reminders, review of hospital and outpatient quality indicators, and working directly with quality improvement and patient safety managers and their inter-professional teams.

The CRQS also spends time disseminating quality and safety information and methods by overseeing and teaching junior residents in the program. The curriculum includes clinical reminders and quality indicators, including “resident report cards,” and is updated annually and delivered by the CRQS.

In addition, the CRQS serves as junior faculty to residents on the inpatient service for a total of 4 weeks. Chiefs report to the Program Director and Chief of Medicine at VA Medical Center. Supervision of monthly morbidity & mortality conferences as well as regular medical student teaching are additional expectations. This 12-month position fosters growth and development of leadership, administrative and practice skills, and is ideal for an Internal Medicine residency graduate considering academics, practice or fellowship.


Job Requirements
• Applicant should be a graduate of a three-year Internal Medicine Residency prior to July 31, 2012 and eligible for the ABIM certifying examination.
• Applicant should also be eligible for licensure to practice medicine as an independent practitioner in any State in the United States as well as certified in CPR and ACLS.
• This position is eligible for Visa sponsorship
