PGY1 certificate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes to all 3 questions.

We only give PGY1 certificates to our prelims. Obviously, if someone wants to apply for a full license (for moonlighting), we're happy to complete a statement that they have completed their PGY-1.

The only certificate I got was after I finished all three years of residency.

I'm in a categorical program and thinking of saying adios end of June. At least by that time, I could take step 3 and get my license. Thinking of quitting now actually. I absolutely hate HATE H-A-T-E medicine!!!

Going to be blunt. Dude suck it up. It's hard out there for non-board certified doctors with just a license. Outside of moonlighting occasionally you will not be able to find consistent employment. Some days the job sucks but put your time in and then make a change after you are board certified. At a minimum transfer to a different specialty that is shorter and/or you like better. Do not be one of the many sad tales on this board.

^This.

It doesn't take much looking around on SDN to find sob stories of people who got fired from or quit residencies and are now stuck w/o a job (or with a crappy one). Your non-medical options (consulting, pharma, whatever) are going to be way better if you're BC/BE than if you completed a 1 year internship and then bailed out.

Seriously? I sure hope you are independently wealthy and have no student loan debt. You will NEVER make enough to pay your bills if you don't finish residency. Don't be stupid. 2 years of misery out weighs a lifetime of poverty.

LOCUMS will not take anyone who is not board certified.

You will be reduced to urgent care (if you are lucky) and even that is not guaranteed.

And do what? how are you going to pay off your loans?

Devil's advocate here: you absolutely should suck it up and not quit, there are so many doors that will be closed. That being said, there ARE indeed locums for non BE/BC physicians, varies by state as some require more than 1 yr post grad training.
FYI: I know someone who switched and had a year "out" and did locums in the midwest making full doctor wages.

.

This may be so but I have never seen a job like this unless its in a prison or some other really undesireable location. My point is to not count on making ends meet as locums if you are not BC/BE. The jobs are few and your friend is not the norm.

Ha that's funny because it WAS in a prison! Surprisingly though, it really didn't sound too bad...perhaps even better than PP in some regards: less drug seeking, pts were better behaved (?), easy schedule, no call....okay bottom line to OP - or whoever was considering relinquishing their residency spot: DO NOT DO IT! It would not make for a good long term career!
