PGY1 Transitional or IM year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They can do a transitional year, preliminary IM year, or prelim surgery year. A year in FM can also be used if acceptable by both the FM program (for only doing one year) and the EM program.

Are most EM programs advanced position (years 2-4) requiring an prelim/TY having been completed elsewhere or are they mostly categorical (all 4 years at same program)?

Most programs( ~85%) are 3 year programs. The remaining 15% is a mix of 2-4 and 1-4 formats. The 2-4 formats seem to be dwindling and changing over to 1-3 or 1-4 formats. I'm at a program that was a 2-4 when I matched that has since changed over to a 1-3.

This may seem like a stupid question, but what do they do with the classes in progress? Do they remain on the same track and complete 4 years, with a theoretical graduating residency class that could have PGY-3's and PGY-4's?

Not a stupid question at all. Classes in progress have to continue on the RRC track that was approved at the time of their match. It's not theoretical-- there will be two classes of 2011 at UAB. One will graduate as PGY-3s and one will graduate as PGY-4.

When looking at a 2,3,4 spot, most will certainly take a transitional, IM, or Surgery year. Other 'years' will be on a case to case basis.

I am an 'EM Transitional' at a 2,3,4 (Univ of Mississippi). Its a mix of just about everything, with the next three years primarily all in the department (minus CCU, MICU, and PICU).

Rumor is that we now if SIX 'EM Transitional' alloted for our TEN emergency residents we take each year....

I think this year has been great and has certainly laid much ground work for my future. There are TONS of threads following the hugely debated 3 vs 4 year thing. The biggest point I hear argued is that the 4th year is the '200K' mistake. That may be the case at a place without moonlighting, but at least here, you will more than make that up moonlighting. Lastly, I dont care what anyone says, you can never 'buy' nor put a price tag on one extra year of training.

Hi,
When people do a PGY2-4 program, do they do a PGY1 year in IM or a transitional year? Thanks.

Lauren

University of Oklahoma-Tulsa has a new 2-4 program. They will accept any transitional year, however, they are unofficially linked to OU-Tulsa's IM program.

This means that if you are accepted to the EM program and also apply to the IM preliminary year, you will automatically be accepted.
