hey everyone,

just curious, what are the hours like, on average for PMR pgy2-pgy4(granted, everyone does a different prelim yr). i know this varies from program to program. if people could give me a general idea about their program and/or what theyve heard, would be great..i have a family and hours are gonna be kinda important to me. of course I'm liking what I know about PMR so far as well.

excellent question. put your family first!

I am at the University of Michigan PM&R program. I am a new PGYII.

Keep in mind I have only gone through 3 rotations so far.

Worst: 5am-9pm during a very busy inpatient month. (very uncommon according to my seniors). I averaged 7am to 7pm during my one inpatient rotation so far.

Best: 9:30am to 3pm during an outpatient rotation. I average 8am to 5pm during outpatient.

I have home call. I have needed to go in to work up a problem on average 80% of my calls. That's going in once in the middle of the night, getting a CT of the abdomen, ordering labs and examining patient, then returning home. I probably average 5-9 pages per call.

I have been told that PGY3 and PGY4 years are much better. roughly 25 home calls in PGY3 and ten calls (8 of which are at a small community hospital with "real" rehab patients, ie medically stable) in PGY4. Also, less inpatient rotations therefore shorter days.

best, ligament
