Hi There,

My wife is currently doing prelim year in Internal Medicine in a good University Program. She can start the PGY2 in 2017 (june/july) right after completing her prelim year. She is interested in IM or Neurology.
We are looking for some guidance on how to find the PGY2. We registered to online sites like residentswap and a few others. But it looks like a very few programs post open positions on these sites. Does it help to approach the programs directly? When is a good time to start contacting programs?

Thanks for your help in advance SDN community.

Her best option is her current IM PD. They can help find her a spot. Otherwise, the only solution is to apply again in ERAS for a PGY-1 and mention in the app that you're interested in PGY-2 options also (although it's getting late to do that), or contacting programs via email.

Great! Thanks a lot for your response.
One last question I had was, is now a good time to start contacting programs to check the availability of positions? The reason I am asking this is because, right now programs may get tons of e-mail regarding applications so our e-mail may get filtered out, towards the end of this year or beginning of next year, mid-year reviews may get done so there may be some open positions, and around March/April the advanced position match results get published so there may be more movement.

If the subject of your email is "Looking for PGY-2 position", that's not going to get filtered out. There is no "best" time to look for a PGY-2, as spots can open for any reason and hence at any time. If I don't have any openings but I'm "interested", I'll hold onto your CV / email in case one opens. If you send out a query now, and then don't find anything, try again near the new year.

Great! Thanks @aProgDirector for your excellent guidance.

Thanks @tal254 for informing me about the position. Hope a few more comes up as the year progresses.
