I heard that Duke takes folks for PGY2 spots, give them a call to see if they are for next year, but that's the word that I've heard.

Stanford and UW accept PGY2 spots. UCSF used to accept PGY2 spots but does not do that anymore.

Aside from the officially pre-designated PGY2 spots, many programs have urgently/emergently available PGY2 spots that open up as residents drop out or transfer. So it can't hurt to just call up programs where you would like to apply and simply ask them if they have spots available.

i believe yale does as well.

Yep-- from their Web site:

We accept 12 PGY-I residents each year, only through the Match. We also accept 4 PGY-II residents, not through the Match. Occasionally we have openings for more advanced positions; if you call us at 203-785-2095 we can advise you about this. We will begin interviewing in November. Once your application has been reviewed you will be notified about whether we can offer you an interview.

Cheers

Welcome to psychiatry 🙂

UTSW has 2 PGY2 spots each year.

My program always looks to add 3-4 new PGY-2s every single year. We're also very flexible about taking off-cycle 2s. Give us a look!

University of New Mexico and USC also have PGY-II spots. I second calling programs you're interested in though, you never know!

The UPHK/University of Arizona consortium program in Tucson has just received approval to add an additional slot per year, so there will be an additional PGY-2 slot available there for July '09.

There's a website that most people check out detailing which programs are looking for non-PGY-Is. I forgot which one it is, anyone here remember?

However, from what I've heard, once a program makes it known--they get barraged with hundreds of phone calls--instantly. My program director told me he did that once and the coordinator got overly harassed. He decided he would never put in an announcement open to the public again.

You're still going to find programs looking for a non PGY-I that's not willing to put advertise. You're going to have to make a lot of phone calls &/or see what some of the residency boards mention. This is probably the best one to look in.
