Can a PGY3 switch programs in psychiatry? I know PGY2 spaces can open up sometimes, but how about PGY3 spots? Does anyone know of this happening?

Seems like a difficult prospect. You'd have to have a situation where a program lost a PGY-2 for an unexpected reason. What kind of problems exists at your program that you'd want to switch after PGY2?

you can check out University of Hawaii psych. They are recruiting a PGY3 position for next july. Hope this help.

yeah i have had heard of this happening, but much less frequently than at the PGY-2 level where there are typically specific spots. typically this is because there is a reason (e.g. family etc) that someone needs to move geographically. it is not unreasonable to contact programs you are interested asking them to consider you if they have openings. occassionally, programs may create an extra spot, funding permitting, for applicants they are interested in who have some compelling reason to switch.

however I have generally heard the few people who have had to switch later in residency say it is very hard to come into a program so late, trying to learn a new system etc.

Thanks for the replies thus far. My reasons both are family related and I feel like I'm seeing too much of one kind of demographic where I'm at.

Is switched as a pgy3. Sometimes programs have spots because their pgy3s leave to do child psych. I did look on the APA site but I actually emailed the program director of the program I was interested in, explained why I wanted to switch and I'm in that program now. I think it did help that i interviewed there in the past and didn't match (I ranked them high enough, they didn't do the same) so they knew me. (I interviewed there multiple times). I didn't go through ERAS or anything.

it still opens a funding spot. My understanding is that a psych program will typically get approval for a total number of residents. So they can choose to fill in different places. I've known of programs that were nominally x number per year, but because of PGY-3s going into child, added INTERN positions...

This can work, but someone would also have to fast track the following year or the program would be up an additional resident for the PGY-IV year. Some places can be more flexible depending on sources of funding. There can be problems with leaves and off track people as well.

There are also rules about splitting training across too many programs. If you do switch between PGY-II and PGY-III, this may limit your ability to fast track as your adult training would be in three different programs. This may not be an issue for you, but just go in with your eyes open.

The bigger barrier to fast-tracking after a PGY-3 switch is that you will have EXTREMELY limited history at your current program when you apply and that might raise some eyebrows at the places you're applying.

Officially it is doable. The main applicable rule is that 2 of your years 2-4 have to be in the same program. As others have indicated there is not much movement that goes on at the PGY3 level. A program might take you if they had an opening and you had a important social reason (e.g. spouse had to move) other wise they would probably prefer to take a PGY2 since they are earlier in training.
