Hello all!
I am a brand spanking new pre-pharm student (B.S. Psych EMU 2003) and although I would ideally attend WSU; I am willing to go anywhere in the country. Any fellow michiganders with experience applying/being accepted to our 3 pharm D schools?

I applied to WSU and Ferris and got accepted to both. Chose WSU, of course. If yo want to go to pharm. industry or research - go to U of M cause they put more emphasis on chemistry and stuff than WSU. If you want to save money - go to WSU it is almost twice cheaper than U of M. People who aren't accepted to WSU and U of M - go to Ferris. Although U of M is considered better than WSU, I know quite a few people who were accepted to both schools and chose WSU.

Im kind of in the same boat. I am applying all over the country but, as far as Michigan goes, I'm applying to U of M and Wayne State. Not to knock anyone who's interested in Ferris State, but it just doesnt do it for me. The town is too small and, although I havn't researched it that well, I dont know how solid the academics are.

I would also love to get feedback on this... If anyone can tell me about their experience applying to UM I'd be eternally grateful 🙂 I really want to go there but I don't know how good my chances are (especially out of state).

I got accepted to Ferris and am pretty sure I'm going there. I'm from Houston, TX so I don't know too much about the school or Big Rapids, MI. The only things I know about their program is that you can do the accelerated 3.5 year option, that their current first-time NAPLEX passing rate is 90-95%, and current attrition rate is 4%. (And I've also learned from other posters that the school is surrounded by nothing but fields...)

Do people from Michigan generally not want to go to Ferris? If so, why? I just want to know what I'm getting myself into...As long as the program is good, I'm okay with the "ruralness" of Big Rapids.

Please let me know what you guys know/have heard about Ferris' program, good or bad. Thanks!

I've heard good things about the academic program at Ferris, and I know the average GPA accepted is actually higher than at UM, for whatever it's worth. The location sounds a bit dull but then again, I don't know if you're going to have much time for partying during pharm school. Maybe the lack of distractions will be beneficial. 🙂

Ferris has the only optometry school in the state of Michigan. Its pharmacy and optometry programs are well established.

Big Rapids is only about 45 minutes from Grand Rapids. Although Big Rapids is somewhat rural, the Grand Rapids area has about 350-400,000 people living there.

All three schools are well respected in the state. U of M has a smaller program than Ferris or Wayne, though. People who live in the Detroit area tend to go to Wayne...it is a commuter school. People who live in Michigan other than the Detroit area (or who want to live away from home) tend to go to Ferris. I know both Ferris and Wayne graduates who are exceptional clinical preceptors now.

The people that said they got accepted to Wayne state are liars...wayne state is still in the process of deciding...just wanted to let u know!

Does anyone know when Wayne State's admissions will be sent? PharmCAS said April 15, but I'm not sure if that's accurate.

Thanks for your responses about Ferris State/Big Rapids! They are very helpful 🙂

Perhaps they have been accepted in previous years...

I am graduating from Umich in a month. I have to say that I am very glad I went to school here. It is true UM is probably a little more research and clinical based than the other schools. But I don't know much about WSU or Ferris, so I can't speak much of them. As for tips on getting in, I think UM looks a lot for extracurricular/leadership qualities and determination. So be prepared to tell them why you want to be in their pharmacy program. hope that helps.

Go BLUE! 😛
