Hello!
I have a question regarding getting my pharmacist intern license. In West Virginia, I saw under the state board website in FAQs:

2) Do I have to be in pharmacy school to register as an Intern?

Answer: Have to be enrolled in pharmacy school or have already graduated

What exactly does "enrolled" mean. Does this mean accepted and filling out paper work, already started classes, or when does the enrollment period start for most pharmacy schools? I know some schools require at least 30 hours of pharmacy school curriculum before you can apply for it, but they seem to have less strict rules. So can somebody explain and possibly tell me if it would be possible to get a pharm intern license before actually starting pharmacy school? Thanks!

I actually was curious about this topic as well. I had a similar question as to when do you acquire the intern license.

Oh, and for any current pharmacy interns, do you guys still have to renew your certification(PTCB or EXCPT) or will a pharmacy intern license suffice to work in a pharmacy?

In MN you are only considered an intern AFTER your 1st year, so no you could not get your intern license here at least. I'm guessing it varies from state to state as I think I heard some ND undergrads talking about how they could intern in their 1st year. I would guess that no state would allow a student to get an intern license prior to classes starting though, I mean you technically haven't started school yet. However, that's just my guess.

The intern license supersedes any tech license. I doubt there is any state where this is not true. Not every state gives you an intern license in your first year though.

Skrumpy mentioned ND as well, but here you can get an intern license after completing your first year as a "Pre-Pharmacy" major. Meaning summer after your freshman year you can start interning.

Got it 👍

What state is this?

Um no, prepharmers cannot get a license in FL. I am shocked they can anywhere.

EDIT: intern license.

Note #7 on the renewal fees.

I know this because just today I renewed my intern license from last year (May 2012) and I was a freshman pre-pharm major for the 11-12 school year.

edit: Sorry, thought you were saying that you can't get one in ND lol. I was like ummmm... trust me you can.

Huh. Can they do intern-y stuff like transfers or counseling?

And no, I was't trying to say anything about ND.

Depends where you work. I've been told that you can only do tech-like stuff, and I've also been told that as long as a pharmacist is technically "observing" you, you are able to do various other things that you feel comfortable/knowledgeable enough with i.e. transfers, etc.

I am honestly pretty floored that that category of "intern" exists. I mean interns can't do anything that a pharmacist doesn't allow, but still. Wow. Very progressive of ND to say the least.
