How many of you have had pharmacist mentors before entering pharmacy school and continued the relationship throughout your pharmacy schooling and even career?

Thoughts, experiences, etc??

I have pharmacist mentors from my workplace. I think mentors are important for professional growth. There are certain things that cannot be learned in the classroom...and I'm not just talking about therapeutic differences between textbook and real world practice.

Mentors are invaluable. The impact they have on your career and personal development will go beyond your immediate perceptions. Personally, through that relationship, I have gained practice exposure, career advice, project participation, networked recommendations for residency position, probably about a page on my CV after its all said and done 😛, and a really cool friend. From my experience, I would say the best mentor to seek is someone working in the career position you desire. If you're like me, this would be a time demanding position and therefore be very mindful of their availability and show your motivation to succeed at your career goals as you want them to know they are not wasting their time on just anybody.

I still have 2 very close mentors who I talk to weekly. Not only have they help me achieve professionally they are my lifelong friends.

My faculty mentors are like this to me. One in particular who just "gets" me and I get her. It's a perfect fit and I wouldn't be where I am without her. I imagine we will be lifelong friends.

It's so weird I posted this thread up because I've had a pharmacist mentor throughout my "pre-pharmacy" experience and I just got accepted into pharmacy school. I was really looking forward to continuing to grow with my mentor/company and then I came into work today to find out he was fired, the company won't tell me why and he won't reply to my messages 🙁

Maybe he/she will get back to you when things settle down a bit. If not, a good starting point is pharmacy professional organization mentors/ pharmacy student organizations because their advisors tend to be good mentors. Having mentors in the pharmacy profession is priceless. We students/new practitioners need honest feedback and constructive criticism. Your classmates will always agree with you whether you are right or wrong. You might run into preceptors on your rotations that have nothing good to say about you (to you). but having a mentor will be the balance that guides you and tells you when you actually screw up! Good luck.
