So the game is this: The person ahead of you names a drug and you tell the board the 5 most important things about it. Then, you pick a drug and the next person replies with it MOA etc. It's nerdy but it's a pharmacy forum so wtf why not?

First drug: octreotide

• more potent inhibitor of growth hormone, glucagon, and insulin than the natural hormone
• Inhibit secretion of many hormones, such as gastrin, cholecystokinin, glucagon, growth hormone, insulin, secretin, pancreatic polypeptide, TSH, and vasoactive intestinal peptide.
• Reduce secretion of fluids by the intestine and pancreas
• Reduce gastrointestinal motility and inhibit contraction of the gallbladder.

I had to go on wikipedia.

nerdiest pharmacy thing I've done:

Gone out to dinner/drinks with the residents from the other programs in town - we all went to different schools. By the end of the night we were comparing drug pronunciations. meTOprolol vs metoPROlol was the biggie.

octreotide
1. mimics the actions of somatostatin in the body which includes controlling growth hormone release and glucose balance
2. since it contols growth hormone release it treats acromegaly
3. it also treats diarrhea associated with various cancers and also controls bleeding of varices
4. half life is approximately 90 minutes
5. for diarrhea doses usually range from 50 mcg - 600 mcg subQ in 2-4 divided doses. Usually its dosed Q8H here. i usually see doses in the range of 150-200 mcg.
