does one have to be a lisenced pharmacist to own a pharmacy? can one simply run a pharmacy as a business venture and employ pharmacists? i ask because while i am studying to become an optometrist, my dad wants me to take over his store and run it as well (he is a pharmacist) after he retires. i would do all the paperwork (headache), payroll, etc... and while this would inevitably be more challenging for me due to me not actually being in the profession, this is allowable?

thanks for your time.

Yes,

non pharmacist can own a pharmcy. Then you can hire your dad to work for you.. and fire him at will.

haha, he was actually joking about this too. thanks for your response, it is appreciated.

In US it's not required that owner be a pharmacist. You would just need a licensed pharmacist to be a pharmacist-in-charge. In some countries, like Germany, a pharmacy has to be owned by a pharmacist, and large chains are not allowed (maximum number of pharmacist a pharmacist may own is 8).
