I’m a recent graduate who was just employed in a retail setting. My long-term goal is to be working in a hospital (which I have been applying to but of course I really have no experience besides IPPE/APPE). I applied to residency during my last year of school but of course I didn’t match.

I would want to know if it is worth re-applying or should I just try to gain more experience and apply to local hospitals nearby?

Also, if I do apply for residency, will I be at a disadvantage since I’m not the typically candidate like a p4 student.

Thank you guys for the help!

Apply within the next cycle. Typically your chances of matching decreases the further out of school you are, but doing it within a year is doable and does happen. However, make sure you are doing stuff that builds your CV that residency sites are looking for. In your position I would say research, publications, and possibly doing a lot of MTM's (or something of that nature) would look very good. I bet your College of Pharmacy would be more than happy to help you find research and publication opportunities.

Also look for per diem pharmacy jobs at hospitals. You can get started per diem, work a few hours a week, prove yourself, and then go from there. Being a per diem employee for a hospital will help you become familiar with the staff there and gives you a shoe in for a residency spot.

I’ve been looking but it’s hard when I have no work experience just from appe/ippe. Wish it was that easy to find a per diem job.

keep working at it. I knew people who, some would say, shouldn't have gotten residencies that ended up matching, and people who should've matched that didn't. If it's your passion and your CV reflects your passion then a path will open up, maybe not a typical one but you could look into options such as non accredited residencies. The other advice given here is great too, I'm sure your school would help out in either connecting you with residency directors or in opportunities to pump up your CV.
