I seem to have trouble finding this answer since I am not sure how residencies work. Do most pharmacy schools provide residencies for their graduating students? I understand you need to apply for it and be competitive (gpa, letters of rec, etc) but do schools actually set things up with local hospitals, clinics, etc?

I guess one of the questions I have for an interview is "Does your school offer any residencies for graduates who want to pursure clinical pharmacy?" But if schools don't do ever do this, I don't want to sound clueless (which I am!!)

Go to the pharmacy forum & look at the very top. There is a whole thread devoted entirely to residencies & fellowships.

You'll probably find the information you want there. If not - come back & ask again.

But - in a nutshell - no...a residency is decided on by the student depending upon what he/she wants to do & where he/she feels its best to get that training.

If you can't find your answer there - we'll help you again. There's lots of folks on that thread who can help you!

Thanks for the answer. I tried browsing that forum but didn't find anything too useful. I'm eagerly waiting for the FAQ's thread to be updated.

For Midwestern CCP (where I have an interview..aka MCV) , they show a page where they offer a variety of residency programs in the Chicago area for their graduates.

http://www.midwestern.edu/ccp/ (Under "Residency Programs")

I have never seen this before and thought maybe it's common for schools to offer them.

Schools will set up opportunities for your experiential education (rotations) that you must complete to graduate, but not residency. Some schools offer their own residency programs, but any one from any school can apply for them. Residency programs are just not through schools of pharmacy either..they can be at a variety of places, hospitals, VA's, industry, clinics, etc.

Since you didn't see anything useful....I'll try to give more info, but this is for a pharmacy interview only - not for a residency interview.

Residencies are for further training in an area of pharmacy. It can be administrative, more clinical, but similar to that which you got during your rotations during pharmacy school, industry, specific clinical areas - pediatrics/neonatal, oncology, nuclear, etc....

They are usually tied with a school of pharmacy, but as the previous poster described - can occur independent of a school & in its own practice setting.

Some students may want to do a residency where they went to school, but often students prefer to see what is done in other parts of the country & use the residency to expand not just their knowledge, but their practice areas.

For a pharmacy school interview....in my opinion, a more appropriate question might be what number of students who want to pursue residencies actually obtain them. This would give you an idea of how well prepared other settings view graduates of that school.

Now..this is somewhat of a loaded question - unless you have data otherwise, & I'm not sure what the purpose of sharing that would be, they will probably say - everyone who pursues a residency obtains it.

But...not every pharmacy school graduate wants to do a residency. So..you could also ask...what types of residencies do your graduates pursue? That will give you an idea of what they feel good about wanting to pursue. This is another way of asking subtly what type of pharmacy practice do they emphasize with their students, if any.

Does that help a bit more? Ask again if not!

Lots of residencies are offered through a "match". I think these are listed on the ASHP web page. http://www.ashp.org then click on Residency Information.

All accredited residency programs are required to be in the match starting in 2007. Non-accredited residencies are not.
