I am currently a senior obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Chemistry Minor and I am disgusted with the usage of multiple choice exams in my upper division level courses.

Am I going to see multiple choice exams in Pharmacy school?

Yup...that was basically every exam I took.

why are you disgusted with them, i love multiple choice exams.

do you a) not like the format, b) feel like they do not test to your strengths, c) think they are confusing, d) all of the above, or e) none of the above

lots of multiple choice exams...fun ones too.

-Multiple multiple choice: you get a point if you circle the right answer, or if you don't circle the wrong answer. but you lose a point if you circle a wrong answer, or don't circle a right answer. try not to go crazy second guessing yourself, because there's always the possibility that they're all right, or that none of them are right

-The ones where theres always an option of "all of the above" and "none of the above"

-100 question true/false test: just had this one in Principles of Drug Action...let me tell you, NOT FUN. damn tricky questions

-Then there's just the typical "assume the position while I ass rape you" type

gotta love pharmacy school

confetti, you forgot the worst ones...

a) and b)
a) and c) or
b) and c)

Don't forget:
d)two of the above
e)A, B, and C are all correct
(or sometimes its "none of the above" here)

I hate those!!! That's what like at least 30% of the questions are like on our exams. Maybe more.

I would hate to have anything other than multiple-choice or matching (I really don't like T/F), and one of the main reasons is that it would take a f---ing forever long time to get our results back. I already hate waiting for the hour it takes to run them through the scantron. I can't even imagine what it would be like to have to wait for more than a day.

Oh, and to answer the original question--all of our exams are multiple choice at my pharmacy school.

Except that some of my exams have read like this:

Choices: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7

a) 1,3 & 5
b) 1,3,5, & 7
c) 3,6 & 7
d) 2,3,5 & 7
e) 1 & 3
f) 1 & 7
g) 1,2,3,5 & 7

I know that we have to get ready for the Naplex and the questions are like this, but wow. I almost always do terribly on these tests.

I have had a few tests that have had some short answer or fill in the blank in addition to multiple choice, but in general, they are mostly multiple choice. It's just too difficult to grade exams efficiently without mult. choice and scantrons.

I have a background in education (was a high school teacher) and in my pedagogy classes it was emphasized time and time again that a well-written multiple choice exam is a good way to evaluate what your students have learned. Of course they are not (and should not) be the only way students are evaluated, but they definitely have a place. Why are you against them? A horribly written multiple choice test can definitely make you want to pull your hair out, as can those stupid a) I, II, and III, b) I, II, IV, c) II and IV, etc questions (they not so much test what you know...more like they test your patience).

Just wondering what your main gripe about multiple choice is...to me whether a class is upper or lower division doesn't automatically change what the evaluation scheme for the class should be. Interested to hear your reasoning behind it, that's all...we all are entitled to our own opinions🙂 I just happen to like multiple choice personally, so I'm going to defend my homie!

I am wondering what classes are you taking 🙂- I am a biochem major(senior) but taken of upper division bio electives and the only multiple choice I have seen what is microbio and even then it was just a portion of the test. God, i wish I had a multiple choice pchem exam - instead of that horrific one I have on thursday.🙂

I dislike MCs because I feel like they do not reflect my knowledge of the information. I get into this mode where I second guess myself a lot.
I can visualize the picture but I cannot connect the dots. Perhaps, it has to do with my learning disorder but it's not an excuse. I try really hard to interpret the information but sometimes it's just too much for me. I get overwhelmed by the questions and answers.

I've done everything in my power to study for MC type exams. I learn well with colour and sound, so everything is organized according to color and I read aloud to myself. I've practiced with old exams and I've taught other students.

I've voiced my opinion to my previous professors and they do feel that a student should be able to demonstrate his or her knowledge through free-response type problems during exams as the subject becomes intense throughout the years. Most graduate school exams are essay type, but there are a few MCs.

Eh.

I don't know but it sucks.

I prefer free response and anything that allows me to demonstrate my knowledge of the material.

I'm not crying about MCs, I'm just freaking frustrated.

The NAPLEX and MPJE are all multiple choice.

At my first quarter at UCSF only one of my classes had a multiple choice exam, and it was about 75% multiple choice, 25% short answer. All the rest of the exams are NOT multiple choice. I don't know that it makes a difference. I guess the format is different, but if you study accordingly then its fairly similar in difficulty. I've had super hard multiple choice exams, and super hard non-multiple choice exams. They're both hard 😛
