So I've been taking college courses during my HS years. I have been matching up with the courses that I have taken with the prerequisites at the Pharmacy school i want to transfer, And I only have these left:

Organic Chemistry I
Organic Chemistry II
Human ata/physiology
Microbiology
Physics I
Physics II

I am going to a university to finish those prereqs this fall. Do you think I can do it in 1 year? and then transfer to Pharm School? ***Do I need to Major in ANYTHING, as long as I finish those prereqs, in order to go into pharm school???*** my non-pharmacy friend told me that i have to major in something in undergrad before going into grad school? is this true for Pharmacy students?? Oh or how about have a degree in something??

I want to MINOR ..(or major?) in Media Art/ Digital Art [if i could] because that is my other passion. I have the passion for pharmacist but do not have the passion for those science courses, thus, I do not want to major in Chemistry or Bio,.. So if I am able to finish those prereqs within ONE year, then there is no way for me to minor in Art right??

You can certainly do those in one year. Are you certain those are the only classes left that you need? No humanities or gen ed class left? One year is too short a time frame to bother with any sort of minor, if those are the only classes you have left just take those and be done with it. And you do not need to have a major. If your college makes you pick one just pick one that will let you take the classes that you need, often biology or chemistry. It doesn't matter as long as you take the classes that you need. Your major is "pre-pharmacy".

Well the school I applied to go into the fall does not have a pre-pharmacy program... I have already taken care of a few maths that are required as well as General Education Requirements (social, foreign lang, humanities) -- UNLESS they don't transfer from the college I am at currently. I still have to check that...haizzz Busyy senior year!

Thank you sooooo much for your quick response. That helped a lot.

A degree usually isnst required, but it helps. The schedule is doable, but remember you have labs to go with those classes so you are gonna be slammed and have no life that entire year.

Yes... I haven't had a life either..since I've been slammed with these pre-prereqs these past 2 years as a HS student hehe

Most schools don't. You don't need one. Just take the pre-reqs and whenever someone asks for your major just tell them prepharmacy. At my undergrad all prehealth students were classified as "biology" because that let us take the classes that we needed and they didn't have "premed/pharmacy/vet/ect" classifications. It doesn't matter.

So... how will my 2 semesters look like?? Suggestions? Not much room to wiggle is there?

Fall '11:

Organic I + lab
Human Anatomy/Physiology +lab
Physics I +lab
whatever gen. course that don't get to transfer

Spring '12:

Organic II + lab
Microbiology + lab
Physics II +lab
whatever gen. course that don't get to transfer

Oh and some people here will advise you to consider taking longer than a year and maybe throwing in those other classes that you are interested in. It's not a bad idea to expose yourself to other fields now while you have the chance. You don't want to play the "what if" game halfway in pharmacy school. Just something to consider.

You only have to take A&P I? That is normally a two semester series.

I want to! That's why I considered media Art... but the thing is... I am not a fan of staying in school too long. I want to be in and out and be done and go on with my career. Those are the only prereqs I have left... but if I want to do anything else, I'd need to stay in longer :'(

hmmm according to the prereqs I see just now, it is still the same, only 1 A/P 🙂

I'd take two semesters if you're applying anywhere other than just that one school. You'll need it.

take that as a strong consideration..but let's see how that first A/P in the fall is...

Life is all about choices. I wouldn't do anything that took me away from my goal. If pharmacy is your goal, there you go. If you don't have a strong goal, the balanced approach would be a better idea.

I'm a little skeptical. Yes, those are the science-related classes you have to take, and yes, you can do that in 1 year. But usually pharmacy schools want various humanities electives to take, so check into that. Then your schedule wouldn't really be doable within a year. I say you should enjoy college, take the other classes, and make it 2 years.

how about having a degree before going into pharm School??

How much college credit do you have at the moment? A degree is ~120 credit hours so unless you have 50-60 credit hours right now then it will probably take you three years to get it assuming all the classes you've taking so far count towards it.

I have about 70 credits right now.
I think what i'm asking is that do I need to have a master degree or any degree as an undergrad to get into pharmacy school?

No. The numbers vary by school so you'll have to check, but for both schools I applied to around 40-50% of students they accept don't have a degree. Not only that but a lot of people who do have a degree only have one because they got it and then went back to school for pharmacy.

Most people here will tell you to apply in a year because they're either in pharmacy school or they want to be in pharmacy school ASAP. We know what we want I guess you could say. If you want to try to get a degree and spend an extra year as an undergrad then by all means, go for it. But it isn't a necessity for pharmacy school.

That I didn't know- that you do not need to have a certain degree for pharmacy school.

So my clarifications are cleared: no major nor degree needed in undergrad school.

yes?

Keep in mind that many schools look for leadership experience, volunteer experience, extracurriculars, pharmacy experience... in addition to GPA and PCAT scores (unless you're applying to a non-PCAT school). Research the school you want to attend and find out what they look for in an applicant.
