Hey guys,
I just wanted to know,do you have to have a bachelors degree before pharm. school, if so, what kind. I was thinkin Biomedical or Biochemestry. Which one would be the best degree?I live in AL., so which pharm school would be the best,Auburn or Samford.Thank yall

There are pharmacy schools that don't require a bachelors for admission. The pre-requisites usually take ~2 years to complete.

There's no best degree for pharmacy. Just make sure you do your research for the schools and complete their pre-requisites.

Make sure you use the search function.

Pick something that might be a good backup if you don't get into pharm school.

^This.

Though getting a degree is becoming the norm, there are still schools out there that don't require it. I got in without a degree.

Many schools do not require an undergrad degree. It is up to you if you want to pursue that. If you do, then usually one in science is your best chance.

Likewise, something that demonstrates your aptitude in higher level science courses may or may not assist in balancing out a slightly lower science on the p-shat, I mean PCAT. For example if you forgot the names of the different parts of plants, or that homo erectus was blah blah blah in relation to blah, in the bio section and got in the 60s or 70s, but you got a degree in biochemistry, or physiology, or anything close to those. If you did well in those classes, then at least your putting a message out there that says something like "hey, I might not know 3rd grade plant anatomy...put when it comes to the stuff that requires a brain, I'm not too bad." Most pharmacy schools probably want someone like that, with a brain and what not.

Choose a degree that you know you will exceed then take pre-req classes. Have a high GPA and it doesn't matter.

Usually undergrads major in chemistry/biochemistry or biology. My advice would be to major in nutrition, biomedical technology or something like that. You can fulfill your prerequisites and still have a solid major. Also, a bachelor's degree in biochemistry or biology really won't get you a job in the real world, as jobs are scarce and competitive for bio/chem majors. with a BS in medical technology, you can fall back on jobs in that field if you don't get a job as a pharmacist (not saying you won't, I'm just referencing the bad job market).

Most schools are what is called the traditional 2+4 programs. Right out of high school, the 2 being completing all the prereqs like chemistry, physics, calculus, anatomy etc. At that point, most programs require you to be accepted into the professional portion or the 4.
Other schools only accept students with a BS degree. They cater to those who got a degree in say..chemistry..and can not find work or to the student who did not decide they wanted to be a pharmacist when they were 18. Some of these programs are 4 yr and some are 3 year. The 3 yr are "accelerated" in that you go to class year round and the days are busy . They both however, require specific prereqs so don't assume you have the right courses just because you have a BS in Chemistry. Check each school that you wish to apply to.
Finally the traditional 2+4 programs usually take a "few" students with BS degrees but mostly cater to their undergrad pre pharmacy students.
Hope this helps
