Hello, this is my first post on SDN
I am a senior in High School (In New Jersey) and I am very interested in pursuing a career in Pharmacy

I am really hoping to get into some direct 0-6 year programs for pharmd
I am applying to:
Rutgers
USP
MCPHS
St. Johns
URI
and maybe some other 6 year programs found on this: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=1700947#post1700947

I am afraid that I might not get admission into these direct programs and I know that the alternative would be to take a pre-pharmacy path and then take the pcat and apply for a pharmacy school. I am really confused about this process. What exactly is a 2+4 program and which schools (in the NE) have this type of program. If you for example go to Temple and take a prepharmacy path, would you take the pcat after your first 2 years and then apply into their pharmacy schools and some other ones such as rutgers?

I would really appriciate any information on some schools I should consider applying to for this 2+4 program for pharmd. Like would I go to a school and take the prerequistiques for prepharm/pcats and then transfer out into a pharmd program into the professional year at another school?

I'm quite the opposite 😛 I never heard of 6-year programs until I was applying for pharmacy school. But basically, it's just like any other health care program where each schools have prereqs classes that you have to take before you can apply. You can finish your degree or you can just do the minimum or somewhere in between. The minimum that you can finish these prereqs is 4 semesters, which is 2 years. That's why they're known as 2+4, after two years of prereqs, you can go to do the four years to get your pharmD.

However, 2 years is the minimum. For my entering class, 1/3 did it in 2 years, 1/3 did it in 3 years, and 1/3 have degrees, while a small percentages had masters or are not traditional students.

Most likely, people take their PCAT in August/October of the year they're are applying, so I took it in August of my sophomore year in college, and since I was satisfy with my score, didn't take it in October/January, but that was an option.

There's really no "transferring" into a pharmD program, either you apply and get in or you don't get in and either do another year of prereqs and try again next year or switch career.

The benefit of non 0-6 schools is that if you decided that the pharmacy is not right for you, you can easily switch since if you get in a 0-6 school, I'm going to assume you won't be volunteering or working at a pharmacy. Also I'm from Texas and we don't have 0-6 schools 😛

🙂 LMK if u have any more questions and welcome to SDN.

P.S. go check out the pharmacy forum as well, you'll learn alot more about pharmacy than the prepharm forum 🙂

Hey, thanks a lot for the information! It cleared up a lot of things, especially about the 2+4 program, and the advice to look on the pharmacy forum was helpful as well.
