I’ve been working for Walgreen’s since last July (approximately 10 months) and was recently accepted into pharmacy school starting this fall. I was under the impression that you became an intern from the moment that you were accepted into pharmacy school, thus being entitled to intern pay. However, my pharmacy manager has not mentioned anything to me yet. I know that Walgreen’s has a tuition assistance program and whatnot and was wondering how soon after you are accepted can one take advantage of these benefits. Also, am I supposed to wait until my manager says anything to me about becoming an intern or do I have to go out and find forms and whatnot myself? I guess I just want to know how to get the ball rolling…

I’m hoping that those of you who work for Walgreen’s and are currently in pharmacy school can help me out. Any advice will be greatly appreciated 👍

talk to your district manager ... your pharmacy manager really won't help you out much. and yes, you do get an increase in pay for the next four years. after that obviously, you get pharmacist pay, which in Walgreens is very very good.

In Texas, you have to complete your P1 year (30credits) before you are considered a Pharmacy Intern. Not sure if its the same in your state.

I recently got hired at Walgreens as a pharmacy clerk/typist. As far as the tuition assistance, they only pay a few thousand per year and you owe them 2-3 yrs of service after you graduate. This is "good" since it guarantees you a job in a setting you are 110% familiar with. No new computer systems or headaches.

However, the only downfall I am hearing is that you will not get a signing bonus (upwards of $10,000) which is probably more than ALL four years of tuition assistance combined. Also, your salary also won't be as high when you graduate since Walgreens doesn't have to "fight" for your services.

If I get into pharmacy school next year, I'm pretty sure I will pass them up on the offer.

You can still intern with them and not accept the tuition assistance (and still be familiar with the computer system etc...) and still get the signing bonus and higher salary, correct? Or are you saying it's in your benefit to stay away from Walgreens until you're a NAPLEXd fully fledged PharmD?

no
just as long as you dont take the tuition assistance...

unless you absolutely HAVE to HAVE the money I wouldn't recommend that deal for anyone. Its just not worth it later

There are lots of people who work for wags or cvs w/o committment and still got all of the perks when recruited.
