Hi all,

I wanted some advice for my situation. I recently moved to the US and am a Pakistani-licensed physician. Since I cannot practice medicine in the US, I have decided I want to work as a pharmacy technician. I am scheduled to take the PTCB exam in a few months. What do I do after taking this exam? Are there other qualifications I need before I can start practicing?

There is a Target, CVS, and Walgreens all within a 10 minute drive from me. A pharmacy tech job at any of these places will be perfect. Please help me understand what exactly I need to do apart from passing the PTCB. Since I have no pharm experience, I feel like my application will be an uphill battle but I am a fast learner and willing to stick it out.

Pharmacy technicians don't really need any experience. I got my job without any experience in pharmacy. The training is usually on the job.

Yeah I went into the stores and applied online. If they were hiring now I would walk in with my resume

I got my job with no experience in retail only volunteering.
I know new York doesn't need the ptcb but many states maybe do.

Look into hospital jobs if you have any near you, the pay is better and from coworkers who have worked both have said hospital is much better as well. Even though you don't have any experience I think the fact you practiced/studied medicine will be an advantage for you and will set you apart from the other applicants

I am a little worried about this because I am over 50 years old and I feel like nobody will take the chance to hire a pharmacy tech that old now that I am reading more about it.

There's no harm in trying, as long as you show that you can communicate well, keep up with the pace of work, get along with coworkers, and can learn at the pace they expect, also be able to lift packages up to 10-13kg and stand on your feet for 8hrs I can't see why they wouldn't hire you. At my job we had just recently hired a woman who is close to your age who had no pharmacy experience but worked in the hospitality department at our hospital for 10yrs and just passed the national certification.

We have older people working in our pharmacy and they don't have any prior experience!
