Hello, I am a first year Biology student hoping to pursue a career in pharmacy and I am wondering when are you supposed to go out and start volunteering in a pharmacy since it is one of the requirements for pharmacy school? Should I go out looking for volunteer work now or wait till later years? Also how many hours are you supposed to spend volunteering, whats the norm? How do you start volunteering... do you just walk into a pharmacy and ask do volunteer work or no? Please let me know. Cheers!

Schools don't usually require volunteer work in a pharmacy. The opportunities for that would be rare (charitable pharmacies). Usually schools want to see that you have done some GOOD with your time other than get through your school work. This can be volunteer work through a campus, community, or national organization. If you want it to be relevant to the school, I might suggest something like the Red Cross or AHA or another medical related organization.

1. Volunteering at the pharmacy shows you took initiatives to learn about the profession of interests.
2. You could go out and lurk around local hospitals/clinics that have pharmacy dept and ask what you have to do to volunteer there. Most of the time they will tell u go to the volunteer dept, and this process can be a pain. With that said, don't wait to next year or whatever year that is convenient for you to apply either.
3. Once accepted to volunteer, the recommended hours is appx 200 or more is decent enough on your pharmacy school app.
