Pharmacy work experience

I'll be doing some work experience in a pharmacy starting this wednesday. I'm interested in becoming a doctor but I thought it would be a good idea to see as many sides of medicine as possible.

Any advice?

hmmmm, lol it really depends on which setting you decide to choose, either community pharmacy, independent pharmacy, or clinical (hospital) pharmacy. since you are planning on becoming a doctor, it is best to work in a hospital setting pharmacy, however that does have an age limit. to start off, i think community pharmacy is more lenient age wise, and its easier to learn your brand/generic name drugs and its use/class in a community setting (becuause its just drop off/production (count)/ and ringing, so if you pick the right setting there would be times where it's quiet and you can learn your drugs, and when it's busy, you'll familiarize yourself with them as well. then you can ease your way into a clinical setting where its more about IV compounding, etc etc =)

As a 4-year pharmacy intern, it's been my experience that, a lot of the time, physicians are out-of-touch with what actually goes on in a community pharmacy. We get at least 3-4 prescriptions per day written for something that either is no longer on the market, has a dose that doesn't exist, or never existed in the first place. If you decided to familiarize yourself with the pharmacy side of medicine, you would be helping both yourself out, as well as pharmacists in the area when you graduate.

I'd agree in saying that a hospital pharmacy would probably be best for learning in the proper environment, but a community pharmacy would teach you the drugs and how to deal with patients properly. Really, it just depends on where you can get a job, but try hospital out first. Good luck! 😀

Yeah, well hopefully they'll offer me a summer job. As it is it's only for a week! It's a small community pharmacy but I know the owner and he knows I want to go into medecine so I'll imagine I'll get quite a lot out of it!

I noticed you're in France - is this pharmacy in France?

My advice - keep your eyes open, your mouth shut & don't touch anything!

Ask questions when there is a slow or quiet time, but not in front of patients.

Ehhh...don't listen to her... as a future doc, you should try every drug in the pharmacy and see what effect it has on you....

rofl, yes the subutex looks quite tempting as does the vicodin...no wait. Scratch that.

Anyway I start tommorow and I hope to learn a lot!
