Has anyone ever heard of someone doing a PhD after an MD, i.e. in residency or fellowship?

I know someone who is working on their ph.d while taking time off of IM residency. She didn't plan it that way, but the opportunity came up and she figured "why not?"

I am actually thinking of doing this too, should a good opportunity arise.
