Hi all, currently considering staying in the US ("top 10" research university) or going abroad (Oxford/ Cambridge) for a PhD/DPhil-- is there any perceived difference, at face value, between these 2? I presume what matters above all is productivity and connections, but wanted to check with the community here before making a decision. Thanks in advance!

UK PhD will tend to be shorter (3-4 yrs) and there’s no coursework assoc with the degree. As far as perception goes, Im not sure if there is a difference or if any in America look on the Uk PhD as being “less rigorous” for being shorter. PhD grads from my lab in England tend to be successful in obtaining good position in both America and Europe.

Like anything else, your ability to raise money and publish papers will probably end up making or breaking your career more than the degree.
