My wife is getting her PhD in molecular biology, but is not too interested in continuing in research afterwards. I've been talking about going into pathology, and she's gotten interested in working in a clinical lab, but I haven't been able to find much information on the role of PhD scientists in these labs. Could you guys shed some light on it for me?

I don't know the details of what employers are looking for, however some institutions with a molecular lab certainly have PhD's as lab directors (overseen at some level by an MD, though that may only be at basically chairman level). They organize and manage the day-to-day operations of the molecular lab, ensuring quality control/assurance measures, validation, interpretation, etc. A lot (couldn't really advise about the actual numbers) of these labs are at academic centers, however, thus encourage or require some degree of research. I don't know about non-director type jobs that wouldn't require bringing grant money with you -- it's probably cheaper and more reasonable to hire and train a lab tech/medical technologist than get a PhD to do gruntwork when they've already completed their thesis and aren't trying to build a research reputation.
