Hi all. i'm a speech pathologist of 24 years experience, working primarily in neuro rehab. i have a semi-burning interest in post-stroke depression, and would like find a way to combine "talk therapy" in my sense with "talk therapy" in the psych sense.
often, with post-stroke patients, doctors have little choice. if a patient has limited communication skills, medication is the only option. if i, as a speech therapist, had the skills to direct our conversation/therapy in a psychotherapeutic manner, i think i could do more good.
do you wonderful people think this can be done with Master's training (there is a counseling psychology program at our local university) or would it require Doctoral work (which would require relocation out of state... pretty much impossible until i retire in 8 years).
thank you for your advice...

You definitly have an interesting idea. I would suggest calling your local university and speaking to a few people there in their counseling program. You can become licensed with a masters degree. Good luck with it

In my experience you should go for the doctorate. There is no comparison in training.

Very good idea, yes.

With your extensive experiences you might want to consider one of those distance education Universes which require little or no physical presence on the campus.
Run a search, there are lots of legitimate and accredited Universes for distance education out there.

Good luck!

If you look at distance learning programs, please do your due diligence as there have been very mixed reviews about those programs. Some have found them a nice fit and adequate, while others haven't.
