Phi Beta Kappa?

Hey, I just got an invite to join Phi Beta Kappa. I've heard it's supposed to be a "prestigious honor society" but is there really a point to joining these over-sized impersonal societies? Anyone else ever joined one of these things? It costs $60 which I currently could pay, but maybe that $60 would be better spent on 60 boxes of mac and cheese.

Phi Beta Kappa is legit, and it is definitely an honor to be invited. It seems early in the year for an induction invitation, but congratulations! Go for it.

Don't turn them down! Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest collegiate honor society in this country and the most prestigious ... it's a pretty big deal to be asked to join, and although the name recognition is lower these days, the older generation (especially profs) will instantly recognize it and be sincerely impressed. Some of the other societies that "honor" you with pricey membership invitations as you approach graduation are a very dubious value IMO, but not this one.

Noticed you are from Athens! I grew up there & went to UGA -- what a great town!!! Homesick for GA just thinking about it 🙁

thanks for the input guys. i thought it was a nice thing to get invited and i've heard of it before, but i wondered if it still meant anything. from what y'all have said i'll probably plunk down the $60 and hope it brings me a good return one day.

I would go for it. I received an invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi this semester. It cost $75, but I chose to spend it on joining (even though I really needed it).

i'm a pretty ugly guy. i think if phi beta kappa is for ugly people then i'd like to join for sure. hanging around ugly people might make me feel more attractive and i might even feel muscular around a bunch of nerds. this could be a real ego boost after all the dental school interviews took my manhood

I actually remember giving the PBK lady quarters and dimes to cover part of the fee...

Now onto a short tale:

I joined PBK my junior year thinking "this will have absolutely no effect on my life whatsoever." Consequently my parents had to twist my arm and convince me to join PBK. This led to a chain of events that culminated with a whole big I told you so talk that has forever precluded me from going against my parents advice without a reference back to our discussion over joining PBK.

So what happened? Well, I graduated with a major in chemistry. Two weeks thereafter I received a letter from a Wall Street VC group offering me an extremely ridiculous salary to work as an analysist of potential investments in scientific technologies. What in the world does this have to do with PBK? Well, the letter said that they got my name from a list of recent PBK graduates from my college. The company did some sleuthing into our academic records and research experience and then mailed job offers to a handful of individuals on the list.

Did this change my life? No. I told them I wanted to be a dentist and then proceeded to rack up a large amount of debt applying to schools. However, the moral of the story is that people take PBK seriously and it does more than just collect dust as a line on your resume.
