Is the Phi Sigma Theta Honor Society worth joining for $50.00? I'm guessing it's another one of those Who's Who's Program things that everyone gets. The minimum GPA for it is a 3.0...not exactly stellar.

I'd save your $50. The way I see it, everyone (for the most part) who gets into med school will have a GPA higher than a 3.0. Therefore your membership in this society won't really distinguish you at all. I'm sure admissions committees are aware of which honorary societies are more prestigious than others.

The only honors societies worth joining are something like Phi Beta Kappa or a professional honors society like Tau Beta Pi (engineering, but there are other ones for other disciplines).

I totally agree with JackInTheBox, I believe those are the only ones worth joining. Unless after you join this honor society you committ as an officer, etc, or else it is a waste of money unless it's a well known honor society like the two that JackInTheBox mentioned.

Really the only honor societies worth joining are Phi Beta Kappa or Phi Kappa Phi - the ones that only take the top 5% or 10% of your graduating class. By joining these you are showing that you are performing at a higher level than your peers.

I got an invite to join for an international honor society for the top 15% of my graduating class for a doctoral degree. Worth it??

What do you plan to do with it? If it's just for a fancy name to put on your CV, save your money because no one will care. If it's a society that is actively engaged in the community or doing things that you plan to get involved in, then it's just like any organization.

Tau Beta Pi - recommend. It is indexed and if you're in engineering it does command *some* respect. Also if you're engineering you won't qualify for something like Phi Beta Kappa so this is your only bet. GPA cutoffs are normally pretty high junior year though- in the range of 3.85+ which in engineering, is work.

3.99 GPA, I didn't join any honor societies (PBK, Golden Key, whatever else was in my emails). The requirements for these are that I am in the top X% of my graduating class, but my GPA already implies that. They all required fees, and didn't seem very promising other than the fact that you're joining the oldest Greek organization or whatever PBK's thing is.

they give these out like candy so I dont think it will be super helpful
