Very long article, but interesting nonetheless.

Also speaks about government spending on basic science research. Seems like most money for research is given by philanthropists, but the research caters only to the interests of the giver.

It has always been like this. As the article states, this has been the case for the last 10-15 years.
Only will become more as the government funding becomes more limited (As you may be aware, NIH R01 funding is becoming harder and harder to obtain especially with the sequestration last year)
