With increasing wealth, a number of wealthy individuals (eg. Oprah Winfrey, Bill and Melinda Gates, Paul Allen, Michael Dell, John Kluge,Ted Turner, Elton John, Bono from U2) have become more philanthropic. As present or future health professionals, thus the wealthier citizens in society, do you feel somewhat responsible for "giving back" to nonprofit organizations ? And if so, which causes would you endorse?

Also, to what extent should parents or the educational system be involved with teaching philanthropic principles? Is the philanthropic tradition passed from one generation to the next ? Does the responsibility lie in the hands of our religious institutions? What is missing from our courses in the school curriculum (history, economics, sociology, psychology, philosophy) which results in young adults without understanding or passion for the noble ideas of their society?

I have drifted away from thinking about these philanthropic things. And it was only as the wealth got large enough and Melinda and I had talked about the view that wealth wasn't something that would be good to just pass to the children.

Until we're educating every kid in a fantastic way, until every inner city is cleaned up, there is no shortage of things to do.”

Is the rich world aware of how four billion of the six billion live? If we were aware, we would want to help out, we'd want to get involved

I'd like to be. Perhaps for Catholic Charities or something, or some type of foundation that hits close to home.
