Hello. I am retaking the MCAT in April 07 and am applying next year to med schools as well. I will have a year off between 07 and 08, so I plan to either do Phlebotomy tech courses or research after June of next year. My question is which one would be better. The research starts in June while the Phlebotomy courses start around the same time. What do you think I should do that would help my application? I believe that once I apply in June, I would start hearing back from schools of their decisions around October/November. Do medical schools care if I am doing research or phletbotomy tech courses simulataneously as I apply or will they disregard that? The research spot is very competitive as it is at Loyola University in Illinois. So, is phlebotomy a could back up or does any one have something else in mind? Thanks🙂

i've worked in the lab for the last 4 years along side phlebs, and b/w research and phlebotomy, i'd put your effort into the research. it will be a few months until you actually get to be a phlebotomist anyway since u are taking courses first. i think phlebotomy is a great back up if that is your plan...you will get excellent patient contact and learning a skill that you're going to learn in med school anyway..so you'll have a leg up on everyone else 🙂 good luck!:luck:

I think it would depend on the exact situation, but I would say that if you are choosing between being a phlebotomist in a hospital where you are working with sick patients and doctors or a biochemistry lab where you are working with PhDs and postdocs spending your time agonizing over amino acid sequences, I would choose the hospital job, unless you are truly interested in the research.
