Phone call to residency programs?

Has anyone had any experience with calling residency programs they haven't heard from looking for information regarding your application / interview? Is there a rule of thumb for this practice?

yes, i have called about 5 im really interested in this afternoon just asking if my app has been up for review yet. they have all been really nice to me. i have either gotten the "we are goin thru 800 apps and you will hear from us either way shortly" or the "your app is currently up review and you will hear by the end of the week".
I would definitely start calling b/c they told me that they will write my name down and make sure that they get back to me. Im hoping that showing intitiative and being nice to the residency coordinator will come in handy
