we are supposed to perform a limited physical on a standardized patient in the next two weeks, essentially just listening to the heart and lungs with a stethoscope. We were told to read a book on the subject but I can't remember the name, and since I haven't been to my physician and patient class in months I missed the instruction. Does anyone know a good book that goes over the basics?

bates' guide

I'm sure it is Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking. It is pretty much the standard and authoritative introductory guide. Your school library will have copies of it for sure.

swartz textbook of phys. Dx maybe?

neways, coloMD's answer sounds like a good place to start.

I recommend checking out Bates from your library. Try to check out both the pocket version and the big version. The pictures are good.

To hell with books, here's all you really need to know about the physical exam:

1. During a pelvic, don't say,"Do you like it when I touch you?...how about here...ooh...yeah....you like it...bark like a dog!"

2. It is always inappropriate to end a rectal exam with, "Who's yer' daddy now!"

Glad I could help. Good luck.

Panda Bear, dude you make me laugh right out loud!
