Hey everyone, I am designing a project for patients at my internship. I want to do range of motion testing/measuring. Does anyone know of any standardized measurements or tests specific to range of motion testing?
Usually, if your using human subjects you may need IRB approval. In addition, you will need to define if it's passive ROM or active ROM, or both. The best thing to do is to find peer reviewed literature, so you can cite this in your project and then run a chi^2 or any other statistical analysis on your results. Unfortunately, taking someones word for the measurements wont be a good source for your project.
There are a few devices for measuring ROM: goniometer, electrogoniometer, biomechanical motion capture devices (IR cameras & software in biomechanics labs). Microsoft recently released software for the Xbox Kinect that can measure ROM (designed to be used in telehealth).
ROM testing is already pretty standardized. Have you ever taken a biomechanics or kinesiology course? Trying to develop a new method is going to be like reinventing the wheel...

Thanks for the responses. I'm not trying to reinvent anything. Our clinic has already conducted balance and functional mobility testing and I was planning to do ROM testing to give our clients an idea of where they are. I was looking for expected ROM measurements in order to compare their measurements and then give them exercises specific to those areas where they do not meet the expected measurements.
A goni or therex text should have the normative values. You can ask the PT's also because they should know the ranges. Keep in mind that ROM can be limited or altered due to many different factors, i.e. hyperkyphosis, previous unattended injuries, contractures, etc.
