Hey I'm considering becoming a physical therapist and for religious reasons would prefer not to touch any human bodies/ parts of human bodies, does anyone know of any physical therapy schools that teach anatomy solely from plastic models (not from dissections or prossections)

How exactly do you plan to practice as a physical therapist "without touching any human bodies?"

haha, i think the poster meant, touching dead bodies. however, i do not know of any physical therapy programs which do not include some type of cadaver dissection, as it is integral to the learning of gross anatomy. plastic models are insufficient to truly learn anatomy. i believe you can ask to only observe and not actually perform the dissection for religious reasons. you may still have to touch the body to identify vessels, organs, etc, but at least you won't have to actually cut open the body.

I'm quoting Jesspt, from the "How To Choose the Right School" Thread:

For example, I know a few students from Carroll University in Wisconsin. They don't have a gross anatomy lab. Rather, they have a computer program that they utilize. I have been a CI to their students and haven't noticed any glaring dificiencies in their anatomy preperation. And their NPTE pass rate seems to be high, so the ommission of gross anatomy hasn't negatively impacted their performance on the test.

I don't know anything about this myself, but you can search the school and check it out yourself!

Rocky Mountain University in Utah doesn't have any cadaver work as far as I know.. That may change in a few years, but for now, nothing.

I whole-heartedly agree... However, due to religious reasons it is perfectly acceptable to request that you only observe and not do any dissection. In fact, I am under the impression that most PT schools that also have med school programs only have PT's observe, with the med/bio students doing the dissections during their lab.

However, it is probable that even if you are only observing it will be necessary to say, place a finger on a muscle/blood vessel/etc when the professor asks you "Can you show me the ___________?"

I remember when I searched for PT schools a little while ago, I found several that had plastinated models. If you do a little research of the schools out there, you will find them. APTA.org has a list of all accredited schools. It may be a tedious process, but if it's so important to you, it shouldn't be a bit deal.

thanks to everyone for all of your help... if anyone hears of any other schools please post them... thanks a million

I am really curious about the denomination/religion that the OP is a member of. I know it doesn't matter, I'm just curious.

That is disappointing to hear. I performed dissection on human cadavers in undergrad. There is really no reason why PT students should only observe other than that the school does not have enough cadavers. 👎

Wheeling Jesuit University...but their facilities are kind of week honestly but if you really are trying to avoid a cadaver lab it could be a good choice.

When I visited Duke they talked about this: PT students perform their own dissections/prosections (and actually have their own bodies separate from the med students) however you are in a team and you can do as much or as little as you want, no pressure. Everything goes off of computer mods and you just follow that as you dissect. So if you don't want to dissect, you can just go through the mods.

Either way, for me...I'm getting my hands dirty.
