Hey All, so i would love some advice on program list. As noted above I am a physician assistant about 3 years out. My actual top choice is LECOM's bridge but I am going to apply to other programs as well. I feel i am most likely a decent candidate for osteopathic programs(although the mcat hurts) but was wondering if it is worth applying to low tier MD programs.

-cGPA 3.49, sGPA 3.5. I have a Masters in physician assistant studies with a GPA 3.85

-Mcat 25(p8v9,b8), although retaking in august with hopes of imposing my physical and verbal by a point

-Clinical work, about 3000 hours as part of an emergency medicine fellowship and now 3000+ working trauma critical care, both at academic institutions.

I also have some work as an adjunct professor(about 20 hours)

-In regards to shadowing, i work with both osteopathic and allopathic MD's and have recommendations from both. don't really have any shadowing advice

-undergraduate research project, 2 presentations but no publications

-maybe 30 hours or so, I was however the president of our student association during PA school

My current list:

Lecom APAP program is my top choice

DO: midwestern chicago, kansas city, NYIT, LECOM, OKST, PCOM, Rocky Vista, ROWAN, VCOM(va/aubrun), wvu, western

anything else worth adding from DO

MD: no idea, is it worth applying?

I have no advice but from one PA to another good luck! What do you want to go into?

(Just finished medical school myself after practicing for a while.)

Hey Makai, congrats on finishing school! Academic Emergency Medicine(possible peds EM). What are you going into?

Not worth applying MD with that MCAT, IMO. Good luck with DO. The clinical experience should be a big bonus, though you might want to get some specific shadowing experience, particularly in environments outside the ED. Primary care, surgery, that sort of thing. You also don't seem to have any volunteering experience?

I think you have a shot at DO. It might not be a great one. Plan for the possibility of not making it in this cycle by getting involved in volunteer opportunities, making arrangements to shadow physicians, and improving your MCAT by more than 2 points.

You should be fine for DO.

The school list looks solid as well. Make sure you apply asap though because of your lower MCAT (try to have your secondaries done by August).

In order to have a realistic shot at MD you'd need at least a 28+ MCAT with your undergrad GPA otherwise you'll most likely be wasting your money.

Good luck!

Doing EM. I'll do community for a while to pay my loans off and go back into academics.

You are fine for DO with your score. I will bet you have acceptances to choose from.

make sure to look in to LECOMs 3yr PA-DO program. You might get into a more prestigious school than lecom but a year off of tuition is pretty significant

Thanks all!!! should i send in my application prior to retaking the mcat(signed up for august 7th date)?

LECOM will most likely take you at one of their campuses. I'd be wary of the three year, as it really boxes you in. Not only can you not do a specialty, but your selection of sites for your residency is very limited due to graduating one year after completing your basic sciences. That leaves you with no rotation grades to give to programs, putting you at a severe disadvantage compared to traditional medical students and all but assures that you will end up at one of LECOM's clinical affiliates. If you're okay with that, it's no big deal, but if you wanted to do a residency elsewhere, it might not be the best choice.

Honestly I think it's not that bad for some folks due to our previous careers but if he is going allo EM he will be way behind the 8 ball due to not getting enough SLOE. In the osteopathic world they are not as important( but getting there quickly). Also scores will weigh very heavy on you app(comlex/USMLE)

I would look on the PA section and ask Primadonna more about the program.

I actually have spoken with her, she's very positive. most of her class got top 3 residency placement including some in academic. Nevertheless, a fair concern i have and why i have not fully decided that is the route i will take

no I am not. I received interviews from vandy, mercer, feinderg school of med. u of co, rutergs, like 3 SUNYS
