Hey!

I've yet to shadow a physician (minimal opportunities in my city) so I was wondering if you guys could list specific, physician responsibilities?? A lot of people say they "want to be in charge" but do they really? As a physician, what does being in charge actually entail?

Also, feel free to list things you have to deal w/ as a physician. (I.e. If you want to be a physician, be prepared to deal with...)

Edit: Besides the obvious of having the final say in making a diagnosis and treatment plans

I'm serious. Often I say I want to be in charge but do I really know what being in charge entails, as a physician? No...not really. So, I figured SDN could help me with some much needed information...until I'm able to shadow a physician. 😀

hang out in your local hospital's cafeteria and wait for a doctor to come in for a meal. swoop in and start asking questions

You guys are idiots! Why would you waste your time responding w/ useless comments? Don't you guys have anything else better to do? Apparently not. Anyway, if anyone has anything constructive to add...feel free. If not, whatever. I'll end up shadowing someone eventually; no big deal. I just figured I'd see what SDN had to say buuuutttt...we all know how that goes on the "Pre-Med" thread. Weirdos. 😉

83% of medicine is paperwork.
15% is dealing with whiny ass people, be they admin, nursing, allied, patients, premeds, whatever.
2% is actual medicine/surgery

Got that, kiddo?

When your patient deteriorates, dies or otherwise has a bad prognosis, you get to tell the patient/their family/your coworkers about it and answer their questions.

When there is a shortage of beds, an excess of beds, an excess of patients or a shortage of patients, the hospital administration will look to you to help resolve the problem.

When there is a man-made or natural disaster, you will be expected to work far beyond usual hours.

When your relatives get sick, they will call you for advice.

There are others, of course, but you wanted the less obvious ones. I've listed a very few of them.

Shadowing won't help much with learning about some of these. It's a great job, but it's about a lot more than writing treatment plans.
