Physicians for Social Responsibility

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm guessing you just got the email too. I'm not really sure what's up with those folks. It seems like a group of idealistic med students that want to be involved in solving the world's problems. I guess I'm too cynical for that kind of stuff.

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) has NOTHING to do with amsa.

PSR is composed of physicians (not students) and does reputable work like charities and social outreach. It is not well known to most students because they do not advertise it.

They're against the Atkins diet because of animal rights. 🙄 I just find that too funny!
Or is that another group I'm thinking of?

I never heard of that group before, but I have heard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

Its a left wing quack group that happens to be a PETA front. They want ALL animal research banned. Not just cosmetics. ALL animal research period.

Of course if you take a closer look at their membership, they only have ONE doctor on the board and the rest are a bunch of idiotic socialist pricks.

I guess I'm a left wing quack. Sheesh, to think I never knew.

Free the animals! 🙂

Anybody know anything about this group? Sounds like a wacko leftist group to me. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

.

They're actually a very good, very altruistic group. They are not a political group. I do find their name amusing though...did they found the group to counter the Physicians Against Social Responsibility?

I only want the animals freed if someone will take them and put them on my plate.

A famous person once said " you dont make friends with Salad" also there is the equally famous "you cant trust a vegetarian". Come on people we have our teeth for a reason lets use them.

In general, for pretty much any type of organization, if you see the term "social justice" in its mission statement, you are hearing code for, "Consistent with the ideals of Marx as espoused in Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto," but put it in a more palpatable, modern form.

tell em to go back to canada

hey now, there is nothing wrong with Canada......unless of course you're detracted by there less than appealing compensation for physician salaries....but i guess it's relative to the person inquiring, no'? montreal does carry the best sidewalk cafe's though...*sigh*

as far as the group in question - so is this a physician run group looking for student volunteers?....idealistic or not, you can't bash anyone with ideals that do no harm..

oh never mind, they support nuclear disarmerment, gun control, and environmental issues.

That said, I'm all for them! 👍

you are an idiot.

i can't say too much about this group, but i have heard a lot of good things. they promote health, wellness, environmental health, disease prevention and education locally and globally.

their political action is aimed at improving health (which i think we're all concerned about, right?). when this includes nuclear test bans and violence prevention (including gun control), some may consider it leftist, but i don't think they are extremists by any means.

check out their accomplishments at http://www.psr.org//home.cfm?id=history.

Huh... that so? Funny to think of the Catholic social justice movement in the same bed as Marx. While there are a lot of movements that have the whole social contract (people groups oughtta work together so that everyone has some minimal level of protection, food, etc.) thing in common, I hardly think all social justice advocates are advocating violent proletarian revolution, or whatever the jargon is. 🙄

[Aside: does anyone actually read Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto these days? I once tried to plough through the C.M. thinking it would be a good intellectual exercise, but the rhetoric was impenetrable.]

Anyway, I'm active in PSR in Philly. They have some really good resources (lots of which are online) on gun violence prevention, which is mostly what I'm interested in. They just had a conference in Philly this summer, mostly about nuclear nonproliferation. it was a rather fascinating mix of well-thought-out foreign policy analyses, Bush-hating ranting (not so fond of him myself, but still...) and adorable elderly sixties holdovers who are still back in the bomb shelter and Russkies days.

And yeah, the name always cracks me up. Like Physicians for Human Rights (also a great group). If you don't sign up, you'll automatically be registered with Physicians for Torture and Oppression.

i went to one of their meetings.
can you say wacko?

AH HA HA HA HA! That's AWESOME! My personal favorite is PETA - People For The Eating of Tasty Animals ...I LOVE animals, especially in a good gravy. And some vegetarians aren't all bad - "I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals, I'm a vegetarian because I hate vegetables." For my money, people who are totally opposed to animal research have a right to their opinion - as long as they refuse all procedures, drugs, products, and knowledge derived from animal practices. I find that it should clear the gene pool and significantly improve the collective IQ.

On the other hand, maybe we SHOULDN'T experiment on animals - if it became common practice for us to test products on human subjects maybe we would get fewer lawsuits for negative and/or adverse and lethal reactions.
