I'm surprised there hasn't been any discussion regarding the fact that they will be lighting up the Large Hadron Collider today.

With a nearly infinitesimal chance that it will create a spontaneous event horizon that will swallow the entire planet, and possibly even the entire Universe, it certainly would place a very dramatic exclamation point on the end of my dissertation.

Even so... I am certainly not quite crazy enough to delve into the physical world, but I know there are some of you out there who are.

Guess the universe ended and only us immortals are left. 🙂

They won't actually be slamming any protons together at high energy for 6 to 8 weeks, plus it won't even be at it's full power until next spring, after it's shut down for the winter. So, we have a bit of time left until we're decimated. 😀

I was spreading the word as much as I could yesterday to friends/family, since for some reason it wasn't all over the news. Honestly, how can you care about McCain or Obama when something as amazing as the LHC is being fired up?

a lot of online news sites have articles about it.

Apparently they managed to send protons going both ways, but they are not colliding them for a few weeks.

I am very excited!!! I love physics, but decided against a physics major (and then probably graduate school) because it doesn't have the same direct applications to humans as biology.

There are so many different things that could happen when these particles collide, even new particles that no one has thought of yet... exciting!

It would seriously be cool if there was a dramatic discovery and new understanding of subatomic particles.

A black hole that swallows the planet might suck, however.
