Just wondering about if those courses counted as an upper level bio classes. I have already taken Anatomy and Physiology (both with labs, and made A's), but I'm wondering if that and Microbiology would count as Upper level biology courses?

Also, how difficult is the material in Microbiology? Like I said, I made an A in Physiology, and I'm in Bio 2 right now, and I'm 90% sure I'll make an A in this class also. How does Microbiology compare to those? Is it apples and oranges?

I'm considering taking Micro, because I could use an extra Upper Level Bio, but I don't really want to take Biochem or genetics for the sake of maintaining my GPA.

Ehh not sure about anat and physiology, but micro is for sure.

apples to oranges. It would be comparable to something like cell biology

If i had to chose between micro and biochem, i'd chose biochem.

Do you have trouble with foreign languages? That's pretty much Micro, although if they include Immunology in it too it'll be extra-special fun.

Whether or not it's upper division depends on your school and the curriculum, doesn't it? The local community college has a Micro class, and so does the local state 4-year university. As for med schools, most would prefer Biochem to Micro, although some just want an "upper division" related class, and in those cases you would have to see if they have a separate criteria, or if they would use your university's criteria.

Of all the things that could help you prepare for med school, I would say that a good foundation in Biochem is more important than Micro or Genetics, although all three subjects are taught in medical school.

Oh, and I hate Micro.

Really? I honestly thought (from hearing other people & SDNers) that Biochem was harder than micro. If that isn't the case, I might take a semester of biochem (which would open so many more doors for applications). It seems like every other school is requiring biochem 🙁 I just don't want to take it if I won't make a B+/A-/A in the course.

How did you do in Organic? If you did OK in organic, then biochem should be fine.

Immunology is not like learning a foreign language, it is like learning an alien language. My immunology prof said it sounded like Martian. If immuno is part of micro, then hold onto your hat!

On the other hand, I enjoyed standard micro so much that I took the second course, pathogenic micro. All it was about is here is a (bacteria/fungus/virus) this is the disease it causes, these are the symptoms, and this is how it is treated. memorize, memorize, memorize.

Good luck with your decision.

Haven't taken Organic yet... Doing all of them over the summer (and I'll be finished with the pre-reqs). I think I'll just look at rate my professor (I think only 1 professor teaches each course), and see which students tend to do better. Thanks for the input everyone!
