Was wondering which of the two was more beneficial to you as far as good preparation for the mcats.

As far as I know, cell bio would be more beneficial to the mcat preparation, but I wanted to confirm this.

Many Thanks!

It depends. If you have NO background in either, then you really need both. If you have had some of each, I'd go with physiology.

beneficial 1st year of med school: cell bio
beneficial for the MCAT: physiology

thanks for the help. I guess i'll try to fit both of them into my schedule.

physiology is def more helpful for the mcat. at my school though, cell bio is a prereq for physio.

What about physiology vs. biochem?

both biochem and phys are helpful. take both if you can. but always remember that the mcat is a test of your basic science capabilities and the advanced sciences, although helpful, are not required.

but if you have the chance to take classes like biochem and phys, then you should.

i can't take both before the MCAT, i have to pick one 🙁

hmm, ill just let you know right now there have been many questions like this.......and in the end there will be supporters on both sides haha. it really depends which test you get. you can get more biochem stuff or you can get more hormone/physio stuff...just a flip of the coin.

but i guess biochem, since it will be somewhat helpful on the mcat and will also give you experience in the field before you start med school because you have to take it in med as well. and since most people take biochem, you dont want to be somewhat behind when starting med school. these are all pretty weak reasons but its something haha.

take the class you feel you know the LEAST about. that way you are strengthening yourself either way!
it's the best thing - for the mcat AND med school!

thanks for all the suggestions.

Cell bio is worthless in med school and equially worthless before med school. To do well on MCATs, do well in your first-year biology class.

It looks like I am living proof you don't Physiology. I covered everything in that class between my intro bio class and biochem, neuro etc. I would take cell bio, more problem solving involved...and will cover things not found in other classes.

I would take physiology for the MCAT over both cell and biochem. I'd also make sure to take Genetics and Micro. I was lucky to have finished most pre-reqs before taking the MCAT, and I only saw biochem come up a few times, and it was very basic.

Thanks for all the replies! I've decided to go with physio (already did cbio)
