Hey guys, looking forward to meeting my class mates this aug. However I just got accepted, well got the official acceptance letter a few weeks ago, even though the email was sent a month and a bit ago...still havent GOT the DORM application so I don't know if I have to rush like mad to get everything together. Like for all my classmates, have ALL OF YOU already found a PLACE? I have no clue where to start! I so want a dorm but its already MAY 20th and i havent gotten the application for the JUNE 1st DEADLINE! Also, any canadians going to NYU? Im from Alberta.

After visiting NYC and the school it seems great with all the rumors being false. I mean the new dean really seems like he's leading the school towards a good future and right direction. I picked NYU over tufts and bu also bc I was put on the waiting list for both but was told I would be accepted for the fall 07 if the classes didnt open up for this fall. SO i guess I could have a year off if i wanted to but then again I don't want to count on their word telling me im in for fall 07, because they told me this on the phone! ANyways Just wanted to ask my fellow NYU Class of 2010 mates if you all have found a PLACE ALREADY!?

Congrats. I havent found a place yet but I think I am gonna try to find a good deal on a studio in the area. Trust me , you do not want to live in the dorms. They are def a step down from my freshman college dorms and not worth $1800 a month at all. You could easily rent a place for less, esp if you found some people to live with.

Good choice! 😉

"I have no clue where to start!"

Start by looking at www.craigslist.org. They have tons of listings for apartments in manhattan. It would be helpful to get a hold of the subway map of manhattan (I picked one up when I interviewed, but you can get one online). I'll give u a short synopsis of where you could possibly live:

1) New Jersey - Hoboken or Jersey City seems to be where some dental students live because it's cheaper. The downside of this route is that you will commute around 30 minutes or more by taking the PATH train into Manhattan. Also, once the PATH train reaches 23rd street of Manhattan, you will walk about another 15 minutes to the school.

2) Upper East Side - It is slightly cheaper living in this area. From what I've seen, you can get a studio or 1bd anywhere from $1500 to 2000. It's nice option if you have dogs because its next to central park. You will have to take the 4,5,6 train going South to 23rd street and walk for another 5-10 minutes to the school.

3) Lower East Side/East Villiage - It's pretty much the same as the Upper East Side. Maybe slightly higher in cost. You take the same 4,5,6 train going North to 23rd Street and walking another 5-10 minutes to teh school.

4) East Williamsburg/Bushwick - This is located in between Queens and Brooklyn area. The farther east you go, the cheaper rent you'll find. I've seen really good rent prices in this area. You'll take the "L" train going West to the 1st Ave stop and then walk another 5-10 minutes to the school.

5) Murray Hill/Kips Bay/Gramercy - This is by far the most convenient since it is walking distance to the school. However, you will be paying for it. The lowest rent I've seen for these areas are $1700 for tiny studios. Some of the apartments that dental students live in are:

www.kipsbaycourt.com
www.watersideplaza.com
www.pcvst.com/home.asp

Hope this helps...

By the way, I was told that the best time to look for apartments in NYC is about a month (or weeks) before move in date.

just thought i'd throw this in:

my sister recently moved to manhattan (east 11th/alphabet city) and is paying $1350/month for a 300sf studio. if all you need is a crash pad, you are probably looking at 1100-1500 or more... if you want a full blown 1 bedroom apartment with any normal amount of room, you are probably looking at more than 2000.

when my sister lived in the NYU dorms she paid $220/week and she didn't think they were all that terrible.

general-the path to manhatten is 15 minutes-you can then take the 23rd street bus crosstown-the commute from hoboken is 30 minutes or so to the school-hoboken is a very viable option, with much more living space for the money. you can even buy for 400k, if you have the funds.

comparing NYC to Cleveland is like comparing Apples to AIDS

hello jlo26

i just recently got accepted to NYU and sent out my deposit just last week, actually. I have been looking for places to live in and around Manhattan on craigslist.org. That has been a very helpful website. However, almost all the rooms available for rent are for immediate takers. I would really prefer to room with a student, so if you want to look for a place together or look for separate places together, send me a PM.

thanks.

Then you are not picking NYU over Tufts and BU because if you weren't accepted to all.
