Good choice!

"I have no clue where to start!"
Start by looking at
www.craigslist.org. They have tons of listings for apartments in manhattan. It would be helpful to get a hold of the subway map of manhattan (I picked one up when I interviewed, but you can get one online). I'll give u a short synopsis of where you could possibly live:
1)
New Jersey - Hoboken or Jersey City seems to be where some dental students live because it's cheaper. The downside of this route is that you will commute around 30 minutes or more by taking the PATH train into Manhattan. Also, once the PATH train reaches 23rd street of Manhattan, you will walk about another 15 minutes to the school.
2)
Upper East Side - It is slightly cheaper living in this area. From what I've seen, you can get a studio or 1bd anywhere from $1500 to 2000. It's nice option if you have dogs because its next to central park. You will have to take the 4,5,6 train going South to 23rd street and walk for another 5-10 minutes to the school.
3)
Lower East Side/East Villiage - It's pretty much the same as the Upper East Side. Maybe slightly higher in cost. You take the same 4,5,6 train going North to 23rd Street and walking another 5-10 minutes to teh school.
4)
East Williamsburg/Bushwick - This is located in between Queens and Brooklyn area. The farther east you go, the cheaper rent you'll find. I've seen really good rent prices in this area. You'll take the "L" train going West to the 1st Ave stop and then walk another 5-10 minutes to the school.
5)
Murray Hill/Kips Bay/Gramercy - This is by far the most convenient since it is walking distance to the school. However, you will be paying for it. The lowest rent I've seen for these areas are $1700 for tiny studios. Some of the apartments that dental students live in are:

Hope this helps...
By the way, I was told that the best time to look for apartments in NYC is about a month (or weeks) before move in date.
