NRMP data agrees with this. Off hand, I recall ~46% matching to top rank, ~70% matching within top 3 ranks. It will probably vary year-to-year.

I agree with ~10 being a safe number to match (although nothing is certain).

Most fellowships have a night shift schedule these days.

You’ll have to wait to be an attending to go back to the 24+ hour days.

Just curious, how much are the programs' call schedules factoring into everyone's decisions on ranking? My residency program does 28h call q4 on certain rotations, and while I naively believe I could survive a fellowship with this schedule, I've never had to do it for 6-8mo/year. That being said, the switches from nights to days and vice versa are no joke either.

I can confidently say that the PD of our program this year brought up the issue of "interest". It did not help the person in the rank list. Like at all. Just FYI.

I was informed by a current fellow that the 'love letter' emails were brought up during the rank meeting, but they didn't elaborate on whether it helped, hurt, or neutral.

I'm also wondering if it would be beneficial to do a second tracking in this thread, but this time for program 'love letter' communications (i.e., 'We ranked you in our top X').

You cannot game the match with your rank order. Don't let the presence or absence of "love letter" communication influence your rank order.

Some programs by policy will not send this type of postinterview communication, and really it should just be banned across the board.
