PICU vs NICU,.........of these two, which is the one with higher earning potential, need yur valuable comments.....

depends on where you are, and what setting. academic vs private? location?

i know academic NICU docs that make <200k. i know of PICU docs that pull in >350K (in a place where that PICU was the only game in town). it runs the gamut.

the patient population is completely different, and the medicine, though not night and day, are definitely different entities as well. i hope you aren't looking at potential $$$ to make a decision on residency. go into ophtho or derm or rads or something. 😛

Thanks

I am already a BC Pediatrician,

I have been told that PICU job opportunity is pretty much limited to centers of excellence/academic centers where most of cardiac surgery is being done, and the breed of hospitalists is well on its way to be the new found darlings of the small town hospitals, who would otherwise have hired PICU specialist.

On the other hand the NICU has much more flexibility, whether in livel 1 or level 2 or level 3 nursery and their lifestyle has much more uniformity and predictability

These are my observations, does it make sense, especially about PICU vs Hospitalists???

Inputs welcome
