I know some of you have them . . . . lips, nose, eyebrows, cartildge . . .

so, what do you do? Or, for those of you who don't, what did you see at the interviews? Did they look super unprofessional?

sidenote: anyone see a tatoo yet? (this one is less of a personal concern since I don't have one . . . yet 🙂

I forgot to take out my tounge ring for my interview, but no body ever realizes I have it anyway....

I only have ear piercings, 2 in each year. Nobody seemed to care. I've also seen people with the cartilage pierced, and nobody said anything about that either. And I haven't seen a tatoo on an interviewer, but most people are pretty much covered during the interview, so unless it's on their hands or face, you won't see it. I have seen med students with a tat though.

I think you have to ask yourself if it is really worth your pride in your piercings to take any small chance that might hurt your ability to get into medical school. Sure there are people that don't mind it, but there are definitley people out there who will consider it unprofessional. You aren't just evaluated by one or two people for admissions, there are lots of people involved and you will interact with all of them on your interview days. You don't know everyones opinion on the matter. I would be more concerned with the people I was interviewing with than the admissions commitee as they are usually physicians in the school who deal with patients as regularly as students. They are going to have a different attitude and be asking themselves, would I let this person treat my patients one day. This is particularly true with older more conservative physicians, and you aren't going to be able to choose which type you interview with. Why take the chance when you can easily not take it? You've invested so much so far and it seems silly to make the odds a little less in your favor. Save it for when your actually in.

If you're concerned about it, take it out. You want to appear professional - and sorry to say, but piercings outside of the regular ol' single in each ear (and perhaps one VERY unobtrusive SMALL nose stud) is a no-no at most schools.

tattoos are similar. cover 'em. Not very professional for a conservative profession.

I agree with mbHopper and ShyRem. Stay away from the piercings and tatoos. I personally don't have a problem with them but other people might and I don't think it is worth the chance. Good luck!

This is not even debatable. In my experience, Adcoms are a little more conservative than the average bear, so why risk the chance of them considering you to be a "skanky soical misfit" or whatever terms these people would use becaues you wanted to leave in a lip piercing. I have read that the only appropiate piercings (besides earings, for girls only) is a girl nose ring for religious resons.

Keep the piercings to a simple stud(diamond, pearl, etc.) in your ear--nothing more.
I've seen some people on interviews that look quite inappropriate with multiple piercings in the ears w/ dangly earrings, and then I saw another girl wearing a nose ring.
Think about it, would you want to go to a physician with a lot of facial piercings? As much as I hate to stereotype, wearing a lot of earrings does not approve your appearance.

I thought that no dangly earrings goes without saying. I did wear 2 earrings in each ear, but nothing flashy. I wore in my first hole, small horseshoe type earrings, and small diamond studs in my second hole. I did see a girl wearing chunky plastic dangly earrings. Don't wear any type of plastic earrings to an interview. It just looks young and cheap.

I plan on keeping my prince albert in.

Well at least they won't know...unless, of course...

Obviously you never read my previous post of how I plan to get accepted once I get to the interview stage. 😉

Hey, I think small nose studs are hot.

If you look in the mirror and have to ask "should I take this out?"...then you probably should.

Same rule applies for facial hair.

I would hope they wouldn't want to see me without facial hair...look like a goon and haven't been clean shaven in years....

🙂

From one unshaven fellow to the next: the trick is to shave just for the interviews and then, once you are in, anything is game.

Time to break this stereotype...I shave once a week...nobody cares...
