I saw the thread about visible tattoos and thought it was interesting, so I decided to make one specifically for piercings. What are your opinions on visible piercings in the work environment?

Keep in mind things such as:

1. location
2. number
3. size
4. color
5. gender
6. patient perspective

And of course, do you have any visible piercings?
 
It's funny this should come up b/c I've worked with a tech (male), who had piercings in both ears, lip, eyebrow...he even had long hair that was always either braided or dyed. He was definitely "different" regarding physical appearance. That being said, he was one of the best techs I have ever worked with and a really nice guy. The problem is that we sometimes would have customers that didn't even want him touching their rx just b/c of his look. It may not be right but that's the way the public is so I would say the less piercings visible, the better, especially for a guy pharmacist because the pharmacist is supposed to "stink of professionalism". I have a tattoo on my upper arm and have always wanted one to extend up my shoulder onto my trap but I would never get anything I couldn't hide while in a workplace environment.
 
I was also wondering if anyone could shed some light on dress code policies concering piercings they knew of, because I have a few piercings that I am reluctant to get rid of even though I'm sure eventually they'll have to go. I wasn't sure if policies varied based on the company or if they were all a standard no piercings allowed.
 
I have my nose pierced. I've kept it all throughout school but I know I'll have to either take it out or cover it up during rotations. More than likely I'm going to take it out and put it back in after work. It's also a really small stud so it's not too noticeable but I definately wouldn't show up with it in to work.

I was with a Gainesville student on my very first rotation last March. She had an extremely small diamond stud in her nose. You could barely see it. Our preceptor told her to remove it the very first day.
 
what if the piercing is more of a cultural thing. Would they allow u to have it. Cos i know in nursing school if it was cultural or religious, they let u keep some of ur stuff on. Does this apply to pharmacy school and work places.
 
I can only speak for my employers - they only allow ear piercings only - on men & women - no discrimination there.

No other piercings allowed - for cultural or religious reasons ever.
 
I wouldn't cover it up, I guess I stated that wrong. I would get a clear retainer. I've had it out for sometime before without it closing so I'll probably just take it out at work. I could never imagine showing up to rotations with it in, it's not professional and I'm sure there are health concerns for some. I've had it for awhile now though and I'm not sure I want to take it out for good yet.
 
hey I have a nose ring- and I wear it to my rotations and work and no-one has said anything about it.
I also had an industrial in my ear, but I took that out before I got to school because I lost the bar in the process of moving and just haven't gone out to get a new one- but I never had problems with that either.
I would imagine that lip rings and more prominent facial piercings would have to be covered, but things are getting more laxed. (I work for Walgreens, and they only forbid eyebrow and lip rings and pierced ears for guys in their dress code)

This post is a little old, but I'll revive it.
I am still in pharm school, and I have been thinking about getting a tongue piercing. From what I've read, the piercing is pretty easy to hide, especially with a short bar, and clear ball. I always dress professionally, and handle myself as such. The piercing is just something I want to do for myself.

If somebody were to see it, would it potentially cause problems for me at the university?

Once I graduate, I could certainly remove it for interviews, and be careful not to expose it during while communicating with customers or management.

Does anybody have any experience specifically with a tongue piercing? Any advice?
 
Why do you want to get a tongue ring? Are you trying to tell guys something? lol
 
I've been working as a pharmacist for 3 years. I have my eyebrow and labret pierced (I am a female) and I just take mine out for work every morning. If I work 3 days in a row sometimes I'll leave them out that long, but then I always put them back in on my days off. I've sort of "trained" them to be left out for days and not close up.

I wish society was different and I could just leave them in. But I completely understand that customers wouldn't respond well if I had them in, not to mention it's simply not allowed.

I also have many tattoos that would be visible if I didn't wear a button up shirt and lab coat (on my arms and chest).

At least I can still be me on the weekends!

Yeah I would do the same thing if I need to...
I guess I was hoping the tongue piercing would be more concealable than a labret or eyebrow, but I don't know if that's true
 
We should be held to the same standards as doctors. I don't expect to be wheeled into the ER and introduced to Dr. Marilyn Manson.

Tongue ring can be hidden if its back enough and youre not a wide mouth talker. I took mine out when I entered Pharmacy school. I got an industrial piercing that I wanted to keep so I figured Id take the other one out so there wouldnt be any issues. Its not too noticeable and Ive had zero complaints about it.

I'm not sure what a labret tells guys... It's not a ring it's a ball. I like it. I am also married, and my husband likes it as well.

They do have jewelry for tongue piercings that the top portion is totally flat and pink like your tongue to try to blend in. That would be your best bet to try to conceal it. I think the clear balls are still fairly visible.
