I was filling in at a rural hospital last week doing a c-section with 2 family practice docs when they asked me to draw up 20 units of pitocin and inject it directly into the uterus after baby was out. I told them that I had already put pit in the iv bag and i have never heard of this practice before. Apparently at this facility they have been doing it for years with no adverse reactions or complications. Just wondering if anyone else has heard of this or would agree to do this. My guess is there is a reason I have never been asked to do this at any of the larger institutions I have worked at. I told them if the uterus was still boggy I could give some methergine IM. Any thoughts?
