pitt students: location of apt

hey pitt students, had a quick question, my 2 other roomates and i found a cute house in oakland, 15 min walk from campus and next door to the bus, i like the house, but the location is far away from everyone else, like shadyside adn squirrel hill

is location really important as a first yeaar? or do most people not spend time in their homes anyways?
im probably going to have a car...

Hey Mango,

I am going to be an M1 and everyone says that there are buses running frequently up and down forbes and fifth avenue till very late to shadyside, but a little less frequently into squirrel hill. I opted to take my apartment in Oakland area because I liked to study at the library and can walk home whenever I want, but if you are someone that studies at home then I don't think transportation will be an issue...this was the advice that was given to me, so I hope it helps.

GOBUCKY! is on point with his comments. Buses do run rather frequently, many at least until 11pm or midnight and some even later. Many people in my class live in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill and have no problem with transportation or being too far away. As for most people I knew, studying was for the most part not done at home but at one of the Pitt libraries, B&N, Starbucks or some other cafe, or the PBL rooms. However, I am sure this differs widely in my class as some people are married and have families and may study at home for those reasons or just because they prefer to study at home. I decided to stay in Ruskin for this coming year because most of my friends are there or within walking distance. My apartment in Oakland for my first year was near Craft Avenue and, in my opinion, was too far from my friends and places to study and the bus did not run as frequently or as reliably as I would have liked. I really wouldn't worry about it. When you say "far away" you mean like a mile or two, or less depending on what part of Oakland you are in. If you have a car, it's most definitely not an issue. I think if you found a house you like in Oakland that might even be nicer since you'll be closer to school. Really, I wouldn't worry about being "far away" at all.

Do some students drive into campus? If so, where do they park? It seemed like campus parking was not available to students unless it was after 4:30pm.
